Lanka's Ruling Party Asks New President To Help With Ex-Leader Rajapaksa's Return

An official claimed on Thursday that the ruling party in Sri Lanka has urged the country's new president to offer security and other support for his predecessor, after protests an economic crisis.

To win a vote in parliament and occupy the top position, Gotabaya Rajapaksa traveled to Singapore last month and announced his resignation as president of Sri Lanka.

Rajapaksa is currently staying temporarily in Thailand. He is accused of mismanaging the island nation's economy, which resulted in the worst financial catastrophe in seven decades.

The general secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Sagara Kariyawasam, claimed that his group had asked Wickremesinghe for assistance in facilitating Rajapaksa's homecoming.

Rajapaksa will return home next week, according to a report on Wednesday from local station Newsfirst, which cited a former ambassador.

Wickremesinghe claimed he was "not aware" of any such plans for the former president's return in an earlier interview with Reuters on Thursday.
